NEWPORT, R.I., September 30, 2009 -- Amanda Avedissian of Bristol, R.I., and Louis Desmarteaux of Hull, Mass., captured the women's and men's titles at the Kia Amateur Australian Open Qualifier, which was held on Setember 26 - 27 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I. Their victories bring these individuals one step closer to the exclusive opportunity to represent their country as a member of Team USA at the World Finals of the Kia Amateur Australian Open, to be held in January in Melbourne, Australia.

Avedissian, a teaching professional at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, defeated Lindsay Grossman of Cohasset, Mass. 6-0, 6-0 for the win. Desmarteaux defeated Jake Worseldine of Middletown, R.I., 6-3, 6-0. Worseldine is also a teaching professional at the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

In this tournament, Kia Motors America is providing amateur tennis players in the United States with an opportunity to experience a thrill like no other, as two talented players will win an opportunity to compete on behalf of Team USA in Australia, with airfare and lodging for the player and a guest provided by Kia Motors.

"As the popularity of the sport of tennis continues to grow, and opportunities for amateurs to compete on a global level is increasingly more difficult, Kia Motors is proud to provide these players the chance of a lifetime to play against other outstanding players from around the world in one of the premier venues in the world," said Michael Sprague, vice president of marketing, Kia Motors America.

Avedissian and Desmarteaux now advance to the U.S. Finals to be held November 5 - 8 in Atlanta, where they will compete against winners of three other qualifiers being held around the country. Ultimately, the male and female winner of the finals will earn the opportunity to represent Team USA at the Kia Amateur Australian Open.

In addition to the Kia Amateur Australian Open, Kia Motors is the major sponsor of the Australian Tennis Open - one of the four Grand Slam tournaments.

New Delhi, Sep 10 (PTI) Indian boxing's jinx-breaker Vijender Singh achieved yet another historic feat as he ensured the country's first medal in the World Championships by advancing to the middle-weight semifinals in Milan, Italy.

The world number two and top seed Vijender out-punched Ukrainian Sergiy Derevyanchenko 12-4 late last night to become the first Indian to make the last-four stage of the prestigious event.

"I am on cloud nine... It's a feeling that cannot be described in words. I have broken another jinx for India and I am very happy," the 23-year-old who won India's maiden Olympic medal -- a bronze -- in Beijing last year, told PTI from Milan.

With the World Championship in Milan, Italy set to begin on Tuesday, Indian boxing is hoping to take yet another giant step. A solid performance there will reaffirm the belief that the sport has truly found its feet in India. More importantly, the boxers will also be keen to prove that they deserve to share the spoils of World Series Boxing.

Of course, the main protagonist for India, undoubtedly, will be Olympic bronze medallist and World No.2 Vijender Singh. "I am fully prepared and confident this time," Vijender had said while recounting his exit in the second round of the last edition in Chicago.

The recently-crowned Khel Ratna will not be the lone hope, as flyweight T Nanao Singh (World No.5) and heavyweight Dinesh Kumar (World No.6) will also be trying to rise up the ladder. Expectations will also be high from seasoned pro Akhil Kumar (57kg) and Jitender Kumar (54kg) who have been, literally, counting days for this coveted event after their inspired show in the quarterfinals of the Beijing Olympics.

And then there is Suranjoy Singh (51 kg) who ended India’s 15-year drought in the Asian Championship in Zuhai with a gold.

"India’s best bet will Nanao and Suranjoy while Jai Bhagwan (60 kg) and Manoj Kumar (64 kg) will be the surprise package of our team," Akhil told TOI from Milan, adding that he himself will be "starting from zero" this season.

Ultimately, it will boil down to will power as odds will be stacked heavily against them this time with as many as 700 pugilists vying for glory. The unpredictability factor will be very high as there will be 6-7 bouts to ensure a medal for a boxer.

"Boys need to deliver power punches each time," chief coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu had said before leaving for the championship. The coach is right, as you can’t rest on your laurels. The nine-member team will need to keep in mind that India has never won a medal in the elite championship. But then, the fans will also not forget that the spirits have never soared so high in Indian boxing before.

The U.S. Open is six weeks away, but the preparations begin in earnest today.

The Indianapolis Tennis Championships launch the six-week-long Olympus US Open, 10 events on North American hardcourts that lead into the season's final Grand Slam tournament. And there will be plenty at stake on the road to New York.

• Federer vs. Nadal: Rafael Nadal, the defending US Open Series champion, opened 2009 with a win on hardcourts in the Australian Open. Roger Federer took the next two Grand Slam events. Nadal, who skipped Wimbledon because of tendinitis in his knees, is scheduled to return at the Aug. 10-16 Rogers Masters in Montreal. Federer and the rest of the world's best are to join him. They will be in Cincinnati the following week, too, as part of back-to-back mandatory events.

• Andy Roddick: The top American, coming off his epic loss to Federer (16-14 in the fifth set) in the Wimbledon final, has been a force in the Series, winning the points race twice in its first five years. But he withdrew from the Indianapolis tournament because of a right hip flexor injury. "I just don't feel like I was 100% ready to compete in a tournament yet," Roddick said Saturday. He said he needs more repetitions playing on the hip to see if he is prepared. Roddick will have two weeks off to see if he is ready to play in Washington starting Aug. 2.

• Serena Williams: Williams has won three of the last four majors, but she has no regular tour event titles this year. She headlines strong fields in Stanford, Calif., in the Bank of the West Classic and in Cincinnati in the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open. World No. 1 Dinara Safina, who won the US Open Series title last year, will try to hang on to the No. 1 ranking.

• A cool million: If the winner of the US Open Series also wins the US Open, he or she pockets a $1 million bonus — on top of the $1.6 million paid to the men's and women's singles champions.
